SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team closed out its regular season with a loss to #3 Pitt in straight sets (25-8, 25-12, 25-13). The top five Panthers strung together a 10-2 run to begin the match and were able to win the first set after putting on scoring runs of five and six, 25-8.
Â
"We knew this would be a really tough matchup, Pitt is rightfully number three in the country and clinched, at a minimum, a share of the ACC title today," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "We wanted to do the best we could with what we had, with a minimum of seven players available. Considering everything, this group deserves a lot of respect for trying to compete with this strong Pitt team."
Â
"For the season, we knew we would have challenging competition," continued coach Ganesharatnam. "With all the unforeseen circumstances making everything more complex and challenging, this group was trying to find solutions, ways to get better and ways to compete. I am proud of that and believe the players deserve respect. I'm really thankful to the fans for their dedication, their support for the entire season and encouraging us when they see us after the matches. I'm really appreciative of that."
Â
The Orange showed resilience in the second frame, not allowing any runs of more than two points from the Panthers for the first twenty rallies, going down 12-8. Pitt ended the second set with runs of five and six to win the set, 25-12. Syracuse continued to fight through the third set, but the strong Pitt squad rallied three separate four-point runs late in the frame to take the third set and win the match, 25-13.
