Another 60 minutes of guaranteed field hockey for Syracuse University is slated for Friday afternoon as the No. 11 Orange meet No. 7 Liberty in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Tournament. Duke University, the three seed this postseason, will host three games this weekend at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The winner of the Syracuse/Liberty game and the winner of the No. 3 Duke vs. American game will clash on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
From the Start
- It's back to the NCAA Tournament for the Syracuse University field hockey team as the Orange earned an at-large berth in the postseason for a third straight season and 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
- The Orange, ranked 11th in the final NFHCA Coaches Poll of the season, draw seventh-ranked Liberty for a 2:30 p.m. showdown on Friday afternoon.
- Syracuse will face the Flames for just the second time in program history, and for the first time in the NCAA Tournament.
- Third-seeded Duke will host three games this weekend as the Blue Devils lead off with American University Friday afternoon at noon. The winners of the two first round games at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium will square off on Sunday at 1 p.m.
- Syracuse is hunting its third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals and would be the only team in the ACC to manage that feat in each of the last three seasons.
It's Just Your 17th Nervous Breakdown
- Sunday was tense for the Orange as Syracuse awaited the decision of the NCAA Field Hockey Committee as the 18-team field was announced Sunday night at 10 p.m.
- The Orange finished the regular season and ACC Tournament with the 12th-best RPI (Rankings Percentage Index), slotting in with a 0.595 RPI. Ohio State had the 13th best RPI at 0.592, a difference of three-thousandths of a percentage point.
- With four teams ahead of Syracuse in the RPI earning automatic qualifiers (North Carolina, Northwestern, Harvard, Saint Joseph's) left the Orange with a razor-thin margin.
- Midway through the Selection Show on NCAA.com, Syracuse was called as part of the field for the team's 17th berth in the NCAA Tournament.
We Meet Again
- Friday afternoon will be just the second time ever Syracuse and Liberty meet on the field hockey pitch and the first time since the 2016 season as the Orange were coming off their national championship.
- That showdown was a neutral site meeting as well, with the Orange picking up a 3-2 overtime win in Hempstead, New York at Hofstra FH Stadium.
- The Orange needed a come-from-behind effort to extinguish the Flames, however. After taking a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute with a Laura Hurff tally, Liberty scored back-to-back goals in the 37th and 58th minutes.
- With games still played in 35 minute halves, Syracuse got a 68th minute goal from Lies Lagerweij to tie the game. It was Lagerweij again in the 73rd minute with the game-winner on a penalty corner assist from Liz Sack.
ACC Field Hockey Postseason Awards
- Syracuse had three names on the list of ACC Field Hockey Postseason Award Winners: Charlotte de Vries, Pieke van de Pas, and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof.
- Van den Nieuwenhof was selected as the league's Defensive Player of the Year. She is the second 'Cuse player to earn that honor, joining Alyssa Manley (2015).
- Van den Nieuwenhof, de Vries, and van de Pas were all selected to the All-ACC First Team as well.
- De Vries is the first player in program history to be named All-ACC five times in her career, while van den Nieuwenhof becomes the fourth player to be a four-time All-ACC selection.Â
- De Vries is a three-time All-ACC First Team pick (2019, 2020, 2023), while van den Nieuwenhof has been a First Team twice (2020, 2023).
- Since joining the ACC for the 2013 season, Syracuse has had 46 All-ACC Selections while the all-time All-Conference selections stands at 121 since the BIG EAST added an all-conference team in 1993.
