#2 Orange Defeat Pitt in ACC Opener

PITTSBURGH – Megan Carney scored four goals to lead the No. 2 Syracuse women's lacrosse team to a 16-4 victory at Pittsburgh on Saturday in the ACC opener for both teams. The win improves the Orange's record to 4-0 this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse never trailed in the contest as Natalie Smith opened the scoring with a free-position goal at the 13:52 mark. Kate Mashewske followed with a goal 10 seconds later before Emma Tyrrell netted back-to-back goals. Carney found the back of the net twice in the final 2:35 of the quarter, the second coming with 33 seconds on the clock, to give the Orange a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Talia Zuco scored 41 seconds into the second quarter for the Panthers' only goal of the second quarter. Sierra Cockerille scored her first of the day at the 13:25 mark, sparking Syracuse on a 6-0 scoring run as the Orange took a 12-2 lead into the locker room at halftime. The 12 first-half goals equal the highest offensive output for Syracuse in a first half this season.

Maddy Baxter scored twice in the second half as Syracuse went on to the 16-4 victory over the Panthers (2-2, 0-1).

OF NOTE
Mashewske finished with 10 draw controls, increasing her career total to 309. She becomes just the second player in program history to record 300 or more draw controls in her career. Mashewske finished with a goal and an assist for a career-high two points.

Carney has now scored four goals in each of the first four games of the season. She leads the squad with 16.

Meaghan Tyrrell dished out a pair of assists to increase her career point total to 335. She is now tied for fifth place on Syracuse's all-time points list with Christina Dove (2007-10).

While the offense was clicking, the defense held Pittsburgh to just 16 shots. The four goals are the fewest Syracuse has allowed in a game this season.
