
Orange Open Weekend on Track

Syracuse track and field kickstarted its weekend at a pair of meets, the Tom Jones Memorial at Florida and the Friar Invitational, hosted by Providence.
In day one at Florida, Shaleah Colaire (1:00.09) finished 32nd in the 400H, followed by Kirstyn Schechter (1:03.27). Xayvion Perkins (51.60) and Elijah Mallard (51.89) both turned in top-25 performances in a deep field of nearly 50 competitors in the event on the men's side.
Trei Thorogood (20.87) turned in another strong performance in the 200-meter dash.
Shona McCulloch won the women's 5k by over six seconds at Providence. She set a new PR in 16:35.31. Teammate Ivy Gonzales was third (16:45.30), followed by Olivia Joly (5th/17:05.61), Caroline Kirby (7th/17:10.86), Emily Nugent (8th/17:13.89), Reilly Zink (9th/17:17.21) and Madeleine Heintz (11th/17:22.95) to take seven of the top-11 spots in the event. Kirby and Nugent's times were new PRs in the event as well.
Naseem Smith won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.70 seconds, followed by David Peters (14.83) in second.
Karl Winter led the way in the mile, with a runner-up finish in 4:00.63. Kevin Robertson (4:01.62) and Nathan Henderson (4:03.79) were in fourth and seventh, respectively. For Robertson, it was a new PR in the event.
Abigail Spiers was fifth in the women's event (4:50.58), followed by Shanley Koekemoer (5:06.82), who set a new personal best.
Silas Derfel PRed in the men's 5k, taking seventh (14:07.95). Jack Whetstone (14:38.00) and Alex Herbst (14:39.07) weren't far behind in 20th and 21st, respectively. Matthew Dragon (15:04.03), Kamari Miller (15:09.07) and Patrick Malone (15:46.72) also raced, with Dragon and Malone setting new PRs in the process.
Alexander Segarra set a new PR in the 800-meters, taking fifth in 1:51.85. Ryder Kriley also set a new career best in 1:56.95.
Bethany Steiner placed fourth (11:12.82) in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Kristine Krumpfer (27.68) and Ariel Haywood (28.16) set new PRs in the 200-meter dash. The duo also raced in the 400, with Krumpfer (1:02.35) setting a new PR. Catriona McKeown was the best finisher in that event for SU, taking sixth with a new PR of 1:00.17.
Action continues in Florida on Saturday.
