Syracuse Varsity 8 completes an undefeated cup season for the first time since 2008.
Back-to-back! The fifth-ranked Syracuse varsity eight retained the Conlan Cup on Saturday morning, beating #13 Boston University by 5.63 seconds to start the Lake Morey Invite in Fairlee, Vt. All four of Syracuse's eights beat the Terriers in the morning session of races. Â
In the afternoon session, #5 Syracuse beat #6 Dartmouth for the Packard Cup to complete the first undefeated cup race season for the Orange since 2008.
"After the pandemic years and being in a boat with four seniors, I think we are all really happy to go undefeated in our cup races for the first time in a really long time," said Arnaud Buard, stroke seat of the varsity eight. "We hope the boys will carry on and have more undefeated cup seasons over the next four, five or ten years."
With the win over BU, the V8+ improves to 5-1 this spring and wins its second cup race of the season. The Orange defeated #12 Cornell and #21 Navy on April 15 to win the Goes Trophy for the third-straight race. The varsity eight finished the 2,000 meter course across Lake Morey in 5:40.83 ahead of the Terriers top crew (5:46.46).Â
"We obviously wanted to execute the race," Joe Willis, 5-seat of the varsity eight, said. "This one was very important to us because the Conlan Cup was on the line. We set out to be slightly uncomfortable at the start, which was our goal, and to find the length as the race went on -- which seemed to work. It's one race at a time and we've been thinking about BU all week. Now we have Dartmouth next and we are looking forward to it."Â
The 2V8 defeated Boston U by 3.14 seconds. The Orange, stroked by Declan Fry and coxed by Michael Harris, crossed the finish in 5:50.12 while Boston University clocked a 5:53.26.Â
In the 3V8 race, Syracuse won by open water over the Terriers. Stroked by Murphy Waters, the Orange finished in 5:52.72, ahead of Boston U by 5.67 seconds (5:58.39).Â
The 4V8 picked up its first head-to-head win of the spring season defeating Boston University by 6.97 seconds finishing in 6:00.64.
In the 4V+, Syracuse, coxed by Sam Fernandez, competed against a pair of Dartmouth fours due to Boston U not having a fifth crew. The Orange placed third in the final race of the morning.Â
The afternoon races began with Syracuse's V4+ placing third to a pair of Dartmouth fours again. The conditions shifted from the morning to a headwind and light rain as the rain picked up as races continued.Â
In the fourth varsity eight race, Dartmouth edged Syracuse and the Big Green 3V8+ won by the slimmest of margins, 0.2 seconds, to beat Syracuse (5:59.4).
Syracuse's 2V8+ defeated Dartmouth by 1.39 seconds to avenge last year's regular season loss. Syracuse finished in 5:53.48 ahead of the Big Green (5:54.87).Â
The hype surrounding Saturday afternoon's Packard Cup race did not disappoint. The rain and wind picked up and the No. 5 Orange and No. 6 Big Green were neck and neck as they neared the Lake Morey Resort shoreline but it was 'Cuse that pulled ahead to earn its first Packard Cup win since 2019. Â
"I think we are getting better and better at staying composed and executing on the say," Isaac Evans, bow of the V8, said. "I think we can do a better job as we move forward at keeping the rate up, relaxing and staying long."Â Â
Syracuse concludes the regular season Sunday morning against #16 Georgetown. The varsity eight lines up with the Hoyas at 8:10 a.m. followed by the 2V8, 3V8, 4V8 and V4+.Â
Next up for the Orange is the Eastern Sprints at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. on May 14.Â
