The Syracuse men's rowing team opened the 2023 season in Redwood Shores, Calif., on Saturday afternoon. The fourth-ranked Orange Varsity Eight (V8+) and the Second Varsity Eight (2V8+) earned wins over Wisconsin and Northeastern.Â
The V8+ began the day with a win over #12 Wisconsin crossing the finish in 5:42.4, beating the #12 Badgers by 4.4 seconds for the first win of the season. In the afternoon session, the Orange earned a 4.1 second win over No. 6 Northeastern clocking in at 5:33.6 while NU finished in 5:37.7.Â
"It was just a nice way to open the season today," Senior Ben Dukes (7-seat) said. "We started off a bit on the rougher side but we were able to figure out problems and execute our adjustments. Hopefully tomorrow we continue to improve and have a good race."Â
"The first race we were a bit nervous but got the job done," said Nicholas Kohl (Stroke). "Both the 1V and 2V had a great day of racing which is a good start to the season and we will see what we can do tomorrow. Tomorrow we are focused on being better at moving the boat, being faster and giving Cal everything we have flying down the course."
In the morning race, the 2V8+ cruised to an open water victory over Wisconsin (+11.9) with a time of 5:47.4. The 2V8+ picked up its second win, by 5.3 seconds, over Northeastern in the afternoon race clocking in at 5:45.2 while Northeastern crossed the finish in 5:50.5.Â
The Orange wrap up the Pac-12 Invitational on Sunday against #1 California. The Varsity Eight is set to begin at 12:10 p.m. (ET) and the 2V8+ will line up at 12:40 p.m. (ET).Â
