Orange Earn Spots in Every Grand Final at ACC Championship

All five Syracuse boats will race in the grand finals at the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Saturday on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C. The Orange varsity eight, varsity four and third varsity eight all won their prelims and the second varsity eight and second varsity four took second to earn spots in the grand finals. Racing starts at 8 am and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
"I thought it was a good day, a good first step," said head coach Luke McGee. "All of the crews either performed at or above their seeding. At a regatta like this where you are racing against top-end competition you have to keep building through the regatta, so hopefully tomorrow we will have our best performance when it really counts.
Since 2013-14 when Syracuse joined the ACC, the Orange has finished second at the conference championship three times, including last year, 2017 and 2018, and were third in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2021.
"We have been talking a lot this year about not making this bigger than it is, it's going out and performing the way we always do, keeping it in the right kind of context, and go out there and finish the job," McGee said. "The character of the team is in a really strong position, they have worked really hard this year, they are an easy group to coach and work with. They have done all that we have asked and now they are in a spot where they have some real opportunities tomorrow, which is a result of what they have done over the course of the year. Everyone is in a good position and good head space, and the boats are rowing well as we look forward to the championship races."
Senior Hannah Murphy coxswained the varsity eight to a first-place finish. The boat that included stroke Annika Maxson, Alena Criss, Izabela Krakic, Kamile Kralikaite, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, India Aikens, Martyna Kazlauskaite and bow Emmie Frederico, beat Miami, Clemson, North Carolina and Boston College.
The second varsity eight, including coxswain Louise Rath, stroke Junior Ognovich, Aphrodite Gioulekas, Olivia Schaertl, Lena Radke, Heather Stafford, Haley Uliasz, Zoe Acosta and bow Kaitlyn Dennis, placed second, behind Duke and ahead of Notre Dame and Louisville.
Coxswain Caileigh Grimes guided the varsity four, including stroke Alice McNeill, Madison D'Ambra, Lea Dahn and bow Mae Sweeney, to a first place finish. The Orange beat Duke, North Carolina and Boston College.
The second varsity four, which was coxswained by April Serrano and included stroke Elizabeth Vogt, Lauren Coop, Sarah Haney and bow Katharine Ryan, came in second behind Virginia and ahead of Clemson and North Carolina.
Third varsity eight gave Syracuse its third prelims win, beating Duke, Louisville and North Carolina in its prelim. Isabelle DeSantis coxswained the boat with stroke Margaux Gryska, Emma Cloud, Taylor Lewandowski, Charlotte Ebel, Nora Radke, Rebecca Farrell, Grace Loveridge and bow Maddi Segarnick.
