Syracuse's four featuring stroke Izabela Krakic, Emmie Frederico, Annika Maxson and bow Alena Criss, raced the University of London & Leander Club in in the Town Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta on Friday. The Orange lost the race by 1 ¾ lengths in the 2,112-meter race. It is the first time in program history that the Orange have raced at the Henley Royal Regatta, considered the most prestigious event in the sport. The Orange had two boats entered in the world-famous regatta. The HRR format is a knockout competition, with each race consisting of two crews racing side-by-side up the Henley course. Each cup is a single-elimination draw.
On Wednesday, Syracuse's 8+ became the first Orange women to race down the Thames River at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-On-Thames on Wednesday. The Orange lost to Oxford Brookes University 'C' in the 2,112-meter Island Challenge Cup race by three-quarters of a boat length. The Orange eight included coxswain Hannah Murphy, stroke Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, Aphrodite Gioulekas, India Aikens, Olivia Schaertl, Lena Radke, Zoe Acosta, Haley Uliasz and bow Heather Stafford. The Island Challenge Cup field features 24 crews, including nine collegiate crews from the United States (Syracuse, Stanford, Texas, Penn, Radcliffe, Northeastern, Princeton and Georgetown). Seniors Madison D'Ambra and Junior Ognovich are the Syracuse spares for the HRR.
The Henley Royal Regatta features more than 300 races in six days showcasing talented athletes from all over the world. The 2023 event began on Tuesday, June 27 and concludes on Sunday, July 2.
