McGee Earns CRCA Regional Co-Coach of the Year Honors
6/4/2023 12:05:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Orange head coach Luke McGee is the 2023 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Regional co-Coach of the Year after leading Syracuse to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championship. McGee, the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year, guided the Orange varsity eight to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championship and to an ACC title. It was the first time in program history a varsity eight boat has won an ACC gold medal. Syracuse, which finished second in the ACC championship team standings, closed the season ranked 13th in the CRCA poll.
Â
At the NCAA Championship, the Orange varsity eight's eighth-place finish is the second-best result in program history, and the highest finish in the current format of the national championship regatta. The 2001 varsity eight placed sixth as an at-large qualifier. The varsity four placed 13th and the second varsity eight was 17th. The 13th-place team finish ties for the third-best in program history. In 2021, the Orange placed 10th, while the 2002 team placed 12th and the 2016 and 2017 squads posted back-to-back 13th place performances.
Â
Every Syracuse boat earned a position on the podium at the ACC Championship, including gold for the varsity eight, silver for the third varsity eight, and bronze for the second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four, marking the second time in three years the Orange have had every boat medal. Graduate student Annika Maxson and junior Kamile Kralikaite earned All-ACC First Team honors, while senior coxswain Hannah Murphy garnered All-ACC Second Team recognition.
Â
McGee just completed his fifth year as the Orange head coach. During his tenure, the Orange have earned three NCAA Championship invitations (2021, 2022 and 2023; no championship in 2020 due to COVID-19) and have placed second at the ACC Championship twice times (2022 and 2023).
