SU Loses At UMass, 2-0
8/31/2023 6:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UMass (2-1-1) scored just 2:15 into the contest and added a second goal in the first half on its way to a 2-0 victory against Syracuse (2-3-0) in Amherst, Mass.
HOSTS PRODUCE EARLY GOAL:
The game was barely two minutes old when the Minutewomen struck first. Sarah Defreitas began her advance from the left side of the field. She struck a long shot attempt toward a crowd of players in front of the Syracuse goal, and the ball deflected into the cage.
UMASS ADDS TRANSITION TALLY:
A throw-in started the Minutewomen's transition from their own defensive end. A lead pass was played ahead along the sideline, far enough ahead that Syracuse goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch raced out to make a play on the ball. Nia Hislop from UMass beat Vanderbosch to the ball and directed an accurate crossing pass that connected with Ashley Lamond, who finished the play with a left-footed drive into an open net. It was Lamond's squad-leading third goal of the campaign.
VANDERBOSCHÂ HELPS ORANGE STAY CLOSE
Although UMass totaled only five shots, Syracuse's Vanderbosch was tested. She came up with two critical stops that kept the Orange in position to rally. Vanderbosch finished with three saves in her sixth consecutive complete-match outing.
ORANGE THREATS:
Syracuse applied pressure to the UMass defense but was unable to capitalize. The Orange accumulated six corners, including five in the second half. Four of the team's seven shots came after the intermission.
NOTABLE NOTES:
NEXT GAME:
Syracuse continues its stretch of five consecutive road matches when it plays at Cornell on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 1:00 p.m.
