SYRACUSE, N.Y. – At the tail end of what proved to be a two-game week, the No. 7 Syracuse University field hockey team toppled long-time rival University of Connecticut, thanks to three different goal scorers in a 3-0 victory.
Syracuse (5-0) got its first shutout of the 2023 campaign thanks to two saves from Brooke Borzymowski. Willemijn Boogert, Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, and Amber Coebergh each tallied goals, while Charlotte de Vries, Myrthe van Bolhuis and Lieke Leeggangers added assists.
UConn (1-5) entered Sunday's matinee with three one-goal losses on its ledger, including a 2-1 setback Friday at Cornell. Rookie netminder Natalie Mckenna stopped nine Syracuse shots and was helped by a defensive save from Sanne Stout. UConn took five total shots, all in the second half, coupled with all four of its corners in the back 30 minutes.

How it Happened
- The first 27 minutes were deadlocked, but the Orange controlled the pace with eight total shots, six of which came in the second period.
- Syracuse got on the board first as Boogert was there for cleanup on a corner that she inserted. Van den Nieuwenhof took the initial shot on the corner, which was halted by Mckenna's right pad. Boogert was waiting near the goal mouth and swatted home what stood as the game-winner in the 28th minute for a 1-0 'Cuse lead at halftime.
- Van den Nieuwenhof tacked on her seventh goal of the year in the 39th minute, completing a perfect corner insert from Leeggangers and stopped by van Bolhuis.
- With seven seconds left on the clock, de Vries found Coebergh one-on-one down low in the Huskies' circle. The rookie feigned to her right before rolling back around her defender to beat Mckenna to the near post and sealing a 3-0 Orange win. It was Coebergh's first career goal and 22nd of de Vries' storied career.
- Syracuse controlled the pace through most of the game, holding the Huskies without a single shot until a corner sequence in the 41st minute. It was UConn's first corner of the game.
- The seventh-ranked Orange out-shot UConn 19-5, applying heavy pressure in the second and fourth quarters as Syracuse took six in the former and seven in the latter.
- Borzymowski made two saves, both in the third quarter, for the first Syracuse shutout since a 5-0 win over Cornell on Oct. 9, 2022, a stretch of 12 games that includes last year's postseason.
- The Orange scored twice on nine penalty corner situations, once on Boogert's second goal of the year and again on van den Nieuwenhof's strike.
- Lynn Farquhar won her fifth game at the helm of the Orange program, equaling the best start to a Syracuse career for a head coach. Her 5-0 start is level with her predecessor, Ange Bradley, who also went 5-0 to begin her tenure. Farquhar was an assistant with Bradley at that time.
- Borzymowski now has 11 solo career clean sheets and her first of the season. She logged five in each of her first two campaigns with the Orange.
- Syracuse opens ACC play on Friday night in Durham, North Carolina.
- Game time for the No. 7 Orange at No. 13 Duke is set for 6 p.m. at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
- ACC Network Extra will have the game.
- Syracuse won its regular season game against the Blue Devils by a 5-1 count last season at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
