
Orange Sweep Morgan State at Home

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse defeated Morgan State (4-10) on Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-16), to improve to 2-8 overall this season. The Orange were led by Ariana Joubert who had a career-high 16 kills on 29 attacks and Lauren McCabe with eight kills and two block assists.

"We had some goals that we wanted to achieve this match," said Syracuse Head Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "We wanted to do a better job of managing runs, which I believe we did today. Overall, I thought we achieved the goals we set for ourselves in this match and because of that, I feel we took a big step forward in our development."

It was an even match to start, both teams exchanged early points and neither team took a lead of more than two points for the first 26 rallies. With the score tied at 11, 'Cuse went on a 5-1 scoring run that brought its lead to 16-12. Syracuse continued to put pressure on Morgan State, creating a 5-2 point run late in the frame to win the set, 25-21.

'Cuse got off to a better start in the second set, creating an early 8-3-point run sparked by a kill and service ace from freshman Veronica Sierzant to make the score 8-4 in favor of the Orange. The Bears returned with a six-point run of their own, taking the lead 10-8. Late in the set, SUÂ went on a dominating 10-2 run that put them ahead of Morgan State, 22-17 in reach of a 2-0 match lead.

The third frame would begin with two points from the Bears including a service ace by Morgan State's Mya Karrick. The Orange answered with a 5-1 scoring run to lead the set early, 5-3. 'Cuse later used an 8-1 run capped off by a service ace from sophomore Melina Brooking for a 17-9 lead. After Morgan State called timeoiut to slow the Orange, SU prevailed to win the set, 25-19, and secure its first sweep of the season.Â

The Orange turn their attention to the Atlantic Coast Conference and will travel to #2 Louisville for the first ACC match of the season on the road Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.Â

Of Note:
- Joubert had a career-best performance, with career-highs in points with 17 and kills with 16, finishing with a hitting percentage of .345.
- McCabe was efficient in the match recording eight kills on 16 attacks and two block assists.
- Freshman Mira Ledermueller paced the team with 33 assists, her second-best performance this season.
- The Orange had eight service aces in the match, with two each from Ledermueller, Zharia Harris-Waddy and Melina Brooking.
- Freshman Greta Schlichter followed yesterday's nine-kill performance with another nine kills today and a service ace.
