SALERNO, ITALY –  Former Syracuse forward Tajon Buchanan made his Football Club Internazionale Milano (Inter Milan) debut on Feb. 16 in the team's 4-0 win versus Salernitana.
Â
Buchanan entered the match in the 77th minute, replacing Alessandro Bastoni, officially becoming the first Canadian to appear in Serie A.
Â
"It was a dream come true," Buchanan told Inter TV following the match. "I couldn't wait for this moment to arrive, I worked really hard to be ready and I'm really happy. Now I have to continue on this path. I played on the left, but I can play in many positions. I [can] adapt and I want to help the team in many ways. Since I arrived, the team has helped me adapt to the game, the staff, the coach and everyone have given me a fantastic welcome, so I'm very happy."
Â
Inter currently sits atop Serie A with a 20-1-3 record, 63 points and plus-47 goal differential. The squad has won eight straight matches.
Â
"This is a very big moment for Tajon," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "It was truly remarkable to see Tajon walk out onto the pitch and ironic Inter's kits were Orange in his debut. We are all so happy for a very special young man. This is just the first step for Tajon."
Â
Buchanan played two seasons at Syracuse, scoring 12 goals and recording 30 points across 33 matches. In 2017, the Brampton, Ontario, native was named to the All-ACC Third Team and ACC All-Freshman Team. Buchanan broke out during his sophomore campaign, posting eight goals and 20 points en route to All-ACC First Team, All-ECAC First Team and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team honors.
Â
Following the 2018 season, Buchanan signed a Generation adidas contract and was selected ninth overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution before signing a three-and-a-half year deal with Club Brugge in the Belgian First Division A League in 2021. With Club Brugge, the forward appeared in 52 matches, making 45 starts, scoring three goals and registering seven assists. Internationally, Buchanan has played for Team Canada since 2021, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with former teammate and current Portland Timbers defender Kamal Miller. Buchanan assisted on Alphonso Davies' goal, giving Canada its first goal in FIFA World Cup history.
