
Orange Outlast Tigers, Remain Undefeated At Home

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a match that went down to the wire, the Syracuse women's tennis team (7-1, 2-0 ACC) was able to grind out a victory against #32 Clemson (7-3, 0-1), 4-3, at Drumlin's Country Club Friday evening. The Orange extended their unsullied record at home this season to 7-0.

With the score knotted at 3-3, the number one singles dual between Emilie Elde and Clemson's Eleni Louka was the deciding match. After edging her opponent 7-5 in the first set, Elde dropped set two, 6-1. The third set saw fight from both sides as the back-and-forth play eventually brought the score even at 6-6. Elde took the early lead in the tiebreaker and held on, finishing the match with a 7-3 tiebreak victory and securing the win for the Orange.

The Tigers took the doubles point to begin the match. Jenna Thompson and Eleni Louka defeated Polina Kozyreva and Ines Fonte, 6-3, in the number one spot. The pair of Viktoriya Kanapatskaya and Elde dropped their match in the number three spot to Sophia Hatton and Alina Tsyurpalevych, 6-4. Miyuka Kimoto and Shiori Ito were tied at 5-5 with Cristina Mayorova and Leigh Van Zyl in the number two spot before the match was suspended as Clemson took the doubles point.

Kozyreva began the singles wins for the Orange with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory against Daniella Medvedeva in the number four spot. Kanapatskaya followed by handling Tsyurpalevch in the number three spot, 6-1, 6-2. Ito squared off against Hatton in the number six spot. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Ito retaliated in the second set and won 6-3. Hatton secured a point for Clemson after taking set three, 6-1.

Kimoto battled in the number two spot versus Mayorova, winning the first set 7-6 with a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker. Kimoto closed out her match with a 6-4 win in set two and gave Syracuse its third point. Anastasia Sysoeva faced Thompson in the number five singles spot in a match that went the distance. Sysoeva took the first set, 6-4, before ceding the next two to Thompson, 6-2, 6-2. Elde finished the match with her victory in the number one singles spot.

Syracuse will be back in action at Drumlin's Country Club on Sunday, February 25, at 11 a.m. to take on Georgia Tech. Fans can come to Drumlin's to cheer on the Orange and get some free pizza slices!
