CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Sophomore Madison Knight went the distance while junior Taylor Posner launched her ninth home run of the season as Syracuse beat Virginia, 6-1, Friday in Charlottesville, Va.
The Orange (13-9, 1-3 ACC) earn its first victory in Atlantic Coast Conference action and hand the Cavaliers (15-9, 3-4 ACC) their second loss in eight home contests this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST VIRGINIA:
Syracuse took the lead from the jump, scoring a pair of runs on an error in the top of the first inning.
A weather delay for nearly two hours hampered play, but the Cavaliers cut the Orange lead in half on the first pitch Knight threw to resume play.
The score remained deadlocked until Syracuse's four-run sixth inning. Posner led off the frame with a home run to dead center, starting the offensive momentum for the visitors.
With the bases loaded later in the inning, junior Kelly Breen was hit by the first pitch she saw before senior Angel Jasso singled up the middle to tack on a pair of insurance markers.
Virginia looked to cut into lead in the bottom of the sixth with runners on the corners and one out. Knight escaped the jam by getting Sarah Coon to line into an inning-ending double play.
Knight picked up her second straight win, allowing one run across seven innings of work.
