
Orange Split Weekend With Loss To Wake Forest

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After taking down No. 8 NC State on Friday, the Syracuse women's tennis team was defeated by Wake Forest (12-6, 4-1 ACC), 5-2, at Drumlin's Country Club on Sunday afternoon.

The first match of the doubles event saw Syracuse (9-5, 3-4) drop to the Demon Deacons as the pairing of Whitley Pate and Casie Wooten beat Ines Fonte and Anastasia Sysoeva in the number two spot, 6-1. The Orange bounced back with a victory in the number three spot as Emilie Elde and Shiori Ito downed Mia Ahmad and Sankavi Gownder, 6-3. The doubles point came down the number one spot. Marcella Cruz and Brooke Killingsworth outlasted the duo of Viktoriya Kanapatskaya and Miyuka Kimoto, 6-3, and secured the point for Wake Forest.

Kimoto had stellar performances throughout the weekend. After defeating third-ranked Amelia Rajecki against NC State, Kimoto convincingly took down Wake Forest's 28th-ranked Casie Wooten in the number one spot, 6-2, 6-3. She finished the weekend 2-0 and improved to 8-4 in singles on the season.

The number five singles spot was next to finish up as Polina Kozyreva dropped her match to Gownder, 6-3, 6-4. Sysoeva followed with a loss in the number four spot to Nevena Carton, 6-4, 6-4. In the number two spot, Elde dropped her match in three sets to Killingsworth, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Ito battled in the number six spot against Pate, but came up short, 7-6 [7-4], 6-3. Kanapatskaya rounded out competition on a high note for the Orange. After losing the first set, 6-4, Kanapatskaya ramped up in the second and third sets to win each one, 6-3, and stand victorious against Cruz in the number three spot.

The Orange are set for an extended road trip, beginning next weekend in Virginia. Syracuse will take on No. 5 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. on Friday, March 22 at 4 p.m. before heading to Blacksburg, Va. to face Virginia Tech on Sunday, March 24 at 11:30 a.m.
