VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA –  Former Syracuse defender Buster Sjoberg has signed a contract with Vancouver Whitecaps 2 of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Next Pro league. Sjoberg was drafted by the team with the 71st overall selection in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft before returning to Syracuse for his final year of collegiate eligibility.
Â
The Uppsala, Sweden, native played three seasons at Syracuse, appearing in 55 games with the Orange, totaling two goals and two assists. A team captain in 2023, Sjoberg had two goals and one assist while appearing in 1,414 minutes on the pitch. Sjoberg scored his first goal in a Syracuse kit in the team's 1-0 victory at No. 13 North Carolina on Oct. 6.
Â
Sjoberg is one-of-seven members from the 2022 treble-winning season to be drafted by an MLS organization. Sjoberg was also part of a draft class that saw a program-best five players selected.
Â
Prior to Syracuse, Sjoberg spent two seasons at Wofford College, where he started in 26 contests and scored two goals. The defender was selected to the 2020-21 All-Southern Conference First Team and was a member of the 2019 So-Con All-Freshman and All-Academic Teams.
