Kanapatskaya And Sysoeva Earn Singles Wins In Loss To Notre Dame

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's tennis team dropped its match against Notre Dame, 5-2, on Friday evening at Drumlin's Country Club.

The Syracuse (9-10, 3-9 ACC) duo of Viktoriya Kanapatskaya and Miyuka Kimoto, ranked No. 74 coming into the match, started off the day by taking down Notre Dame's (14-7, 5-5) No. 46 Julia Andreach and Page Freeman in the number one spot, 6-3. The Irish retaliated as Carrie Beckman and Akari Matsuno defeated Constance Levivier and Anastasia Sysoeva in the number two spot, 6-4. The doubles point came down to a back-and-forth battle in the number three spot. The pairing of Emilie Elde and Shiori Ito took Nibi Ghosh and Yashna Yellayi to a tiebreaker after tying the match score at 6-6, but fell short, 7-4, and surrendered the doubles point to Notre Dame.

In the singles event, the first match to finish up was the number one spot as Andreach beat Kimoto, 6-0, 6-1. The number six spot followed with as Matsuno of Notre Dame bested Ines Fonte, 6-2, 6-3. The Irish clinched the match-winning point when Freeman defeated Elde in the number two spot, 6-2, 7-5.

Sysoeva claimed the first point of the match for the Orange as she topped Ghosh in the number four spot, 6-4, 6-4. Kanapatskaya went blow-for-blow in a three-set contest with Bojana Pozder in the number three spot. Kanapatskaya grabbed the first set, 6-4, but was defeated in the second set, 6-3. In the tiebreaking third set, Kanapatskaya fought hard but ultimately lost, 10-8. Ito claimed an impressive victory in the number five spot against Yellayi. After being nipped in the first set, 7-5, Ito retaliated with a 6-3 win in the second set and powered to a 6-3 win in the third set.

The Orange return to action for their regular season finale in Drumlin's Country Club on Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m. against Louisville for Senior Day. There will be a ceremony prior to the start of the match for the three graduating student-athletes. Orange fans, be sure to come early and be there to celebrate Syracuse in their last match at home.
