Mia Klammer, a newcomer on the Syracuse women's soccer team, is a finalist for one of the most prestigious awards in collegiate athletics -- the 2023-24 Division II Collegiate Women Sports Award (CWSA) Athlete of the Year Presented by Honda.
Klammer joined 10 other student-athletes on the ballot after being named the 2023 Division II Honda Athlete of the Year for Women's Soccer. Klammer earned the recognition after her junior season at the College of St. Rose. Klammer was named the 2023 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Player of the Year Award by the United Soccer Coaches Association (USCA) and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA). She led Division II in scoring with 53 points and averaged 2.52 points per game to set a St. Rose record. In 2023, Klammer recorded 18 goals and 17 assists and was named a first team USCA and D2CCA All-American for her third straight season. She was selected the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year.Â
The College of St. Rose earned the number one ranking in the Division II poll during the 2023 campaign and posted the first unbeaten season in program history with a 20-0-2 record. The Golden Knights postseason run ended in the NCAA East Region Final after playing Adelphi to a 1-1 draw. The Panthers advanced on penalty kicks, 4-2. That same day, December 1, 2023, the College of St. Rose announced that its Board of Trustees had voted to cease academic instruction.
Anxious to continue her intercollegiate soccer career, Klammer connected with Syracuse coach Nicky Thrasher Adams. Klammer decided to join the Division I Orange program and transferred to Syracuse in time for the 2024 spring semester.
In late January, Klammer was announced as the Division II CWSA Soccer Award recipient. In addition to soccer, a Division II Honda Award finalist was also selected in cross country, basketball, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball and track and field.
National balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the CWSA program, will determine the Division II Athlete of the Year. The winner will be announced on Monday, June 24, at the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda, on the CBS Sports Network.
Klammer, who participated in spring workouts with the Syracuse women's soccer team, will be a senior in the fall.
