SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sam Layton, Michal Gradus, Giona Leibold, and Tomas Hut have been named the 2024 Syracuse men's soccer captains, as announced by head coach Ian McIntyre on Wednesday evening. All four players earned the distinction for the first time in their 'Cuse careers.
Layton, a graduate transfer from Brisbane, Australia, enters his first campaign with the Orange after spending five seasons at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. During his tenure with the Cougars, he made 53 appearances, including 38 starts.
Coming off a strong 2023 season at SIUE, Layton was named a Midfielder to Watch by United Soccer Coaches.Â
After spending their first three collegiate campaigns in Syracuse, Gradus and Leibold earned an opportunity to lead their squad in their senior seasons. Both members of the 2022 National Championship winning team, the pair will bring key experience to the Orange throughout the 2024 campaign.Â
Hut enters his second season in Syracuse after coming over from Army following his sophomore campaign. During his time in West Point, the goalkeeper made 17 appearances and 14 starts, collecting 44 saves and five shutouts.Â
As the Orange are set to begin their season on Aug. 22 (7 p.m.) at Colgate, the four captains will look to use their leadership skills on and off the pitch to help 'Cuse to another successful season.Â
