It was a busy summer for the Orange on the International stage as multiple Syracuse women's rowing student-athletes and alums represented their home countries at the U23 and U19 World Championships and the Olympic Games in Paris. Â
Junior Ellie-Kate Hutchinson won gold in this year's U23 World Rowing Championships in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. Sitting in seven seat of the Great Britain U23 Women's Eight, Hutchinson and her teammates bested the United States, Germany, Australia, Romania, and Italy in the final this past Friday with a time of 6:06.58. Â
Hutchinson's gold marks the third consecutive year a member of the Syracuse team has won gold at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships, with Orange alumni Kamile Kralikaite and Martyna Kazlauskaite taking home gold for Lithuania in 2023 and Emmie Frederico winning it all for Australia in 2022.Â
Hutchinson was one of four Orange to represent their country last week in St. Catherine's. Three of the four took home hardware with both Olivia Bachert, bow seat of the United States U23 4+, and Acorn Cassidy, two seat of the Great Britain U19 4-, earned silver medals in their respective boat classes while transfer Ella Mckinley, two seat of the Canada U23 4+, finished fourth. Â
Hutchinson and Bachert both return for their sophomore year after a 2024 campaign that saw the program's first ACC championship win. Cassidy, a first year from Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, and Mckinley, a fellow first year from Aurora, Ontario, Canada, bring their talents to Central New York for the first time this fall. Â
Dubbed "Super Worlds," this year's World Rowing Senior, Under 23, and Under 19 World Championships were all held during this past week in St. Catharine's, Ontario, Canada at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course. This is the fourth World Championship hosted at the event, with the globe's best rowers last competing at the venue in 2010.Â
Earlier this summer in Paris, Syracuse had two former oarswomen representing their countries at the Olympics. Kralikaite '24 placed fifth in the women's pair finals with Lithuanian teammate Ieva Adomaviciute while Hattie Taylor '17 earned a bronze medal sitting seven seat for Great Britain in the women's eight.
