Syracuse All-American Miles Robinson and the United States Men's National Team defeated Trinidad and Tobago, 5-0, in their opening match of the Gold Cup on Sunday, June 15. It was the first of three group stage matches.
Â
Team USA took the lead in the 16th minute with a goal from Malik Tillman. He scored his second goal of the day in the 41st minute, and Patrick Agyemang's goal in the 44th minute gave the U.S. a 3-0 halftime lead.
Â
The scored stayed that way until the United States found the back of the net twice in the final 10 minutes for the 5-0 victory. Robinson entered in the 87th minute and helped Team USA record the clean sheet.
Â
Robinson is no stranger to the international stage. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team that competed in Paris last summer and now has 34 caps for the USMNT. The defender also competed for the U.S. in the 2021 and 2023 Gold Cup tournaments. Two of his three goals for his country came in the 2021 Gold Cup, most notably an extra-time game-winner in the 2021 Gold Cup Final in the 1-0 win over Mexico.
Â
A native of Arlington, Massachusetts, Robinson starred for the Orange for two seasons before signing a Generation adidas contract after his sophomore season. He was the No. 2 overall selection by Atlanta United in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. During his two seasons at Syracuse, Robinson started all 42 matches in which he played and helped the Orange to 19 shutouts. He had four goals in both 2015 and 2016 and posted 17 points in his career.
The defender was a semifinalist for the 2016 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Award, which is the highest honor in collegiate soccer. He earned NSCAA All-America First Team honors and was voted the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Robinson is in his second year with FC Cincinnati after spending seven seasons with Atlanta United, which he helped win the MLS Cup in 2018.
Â
The U.S. will travel to Texas for its remaining group stage matches. The squad takes on Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 19 at Q2 Stadium in Austin at 9:15 p.m. (FS1) and Haiti at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sunday, June 22 (FOX).
