A native of Dundee, Scotland, Guy Cathro has extensive knowledge and experience. Since the age of 15, Cathro has accumulated field hockey skills both on the field and on the sidelines.
Cathro has been an asset to the Orange and its standout coaching staff. Cathro helped lead Syracuse to its second consecutive NCAA appearance in 2009. In 2008, he was a contributor to SU’s most successful season as he helped lead the team to a No. 1 ranking and an NCAA championship semifinal appearance. He was also a key component to head coach Ange Bradley’s 2007 BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year award. Cathro came to Syracuse with broad coaching experience at many different levels. He spent his summer coaching the New Jersey High Performance Summer League team that finished first. In 2008, Cathro coached the Pennsylvania region of the USA Field Hockey’s High Performance Training program during the summer.
Before Syracuse, he was in charge of Youth Coaching at Dundee Wanderers HC, the district Under-15 and 18 men’s indoor teams and the Under 14 and 15 outdoor squads. He provided individual coaching sessions for the Dundee Wanderers Ladies, a team in the Scottish National League Division I. He also coached the men’s Scottish University Select Team, where he mentored three Scotland International players and numerous Under 21 Internationalists.
His playing experience includes time with the Scotland Senior training squad in 1999, Scotland Under-21 squad from 1995-1998 and Scotland University Select squad from 1997-1999. He also earned the British University Championship runner-up in 1997. Cathro’s play contributed to a Scottish National League Division I win in 1993. The team also achieved the runner-up position in both 1995 and 1999. In addition, the Scottish Under-18 Cup team that he played on was champions in both 1993 and 1994.
Cathro graduated in 1999 from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, UK with a B.S. in actuarial mathematics and statistics.
