Mejia joins the Syracuse women’s soccer staff as a volunteer coach after serving as the head coach for the men’s soccer program at Emerson College for the past two years. While there, Mejia accumulated a 10-24 record and led the Lions to their first conference win after transferring to the NEWMAC in 2012. During his tenure, Mejia coached five All-Conference players and 24 Academic All-Conference players.
Mejia has been coaching collegiate soccer since 2004, working with both men’s and women’s programs throughout the years. Prior to Emerson, Mejia served as the assistant women’s soccer coach at Tufts University for two seasons before moving to Assumption College for the 2014-15 season.
In addition to his extensive collegiate coaching experience, Mejia also spent a season as an assistant with the Boston Breakers, a professional Women’s Soccer team, in 2010. Over the past six years, he has remained active within the Breakers system, coaching several of their development teams, including the U20s in 2016 and the College Academy team in the summer of 2017.
Mejia played his freshman year of college at Division I Hartford University in Connecticut before transferring to Emerson College in 2001. As an Emerson Lion he was a two year captain, junior and senior Year, and helped lead the team to the most successful season in program history, going 14-6 (2004).
After finishing his undergrad at Emerson, Mejia went on to earn his Masters in Sport and Recreation Sciences with a focus in Soccer Coaching from Ohio University. This is the first sport-specific coaching degree offered in the country, and he is one of the first 11 students to earn this degree.
In addition to his degrees, Mejia holds certifications from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in coaching and goalkeeping.
