JAMAICA, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Rochelle Coleman scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team to a 75-46 victory against St. John's on Wednesday night in Alumni Hall.
Syracuse's (8-11, 3-5 BIG EAST) win in Alumni Hall was its first in the facility since December 9, 1995. The victory also marked only the fourth time in school history that SU has won three straight conference road games. Syracuse has put together consecutive league road triumphs against Boston College, Miami and now St. John's. The last time the Orangewomen won three BIG EAST games on the road was during the 1989-90 season.
Coleman was 10-of-17 from the field, including a personal-best seven three-pointers. The seven treys places Coleman in second place at SU along with Simone Courtlandt and Jamie James for single-game three-pointers. Junior Julie McBride became the seventh SU player with 400-or-more assists in a career with a personal-best 10 assists versus the Red Storm, and now has 408. She also chipped in five points.
Junior Shannon Perry recorded 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Junior April Jean pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and added eight points, and freshman Tierra Jackson posted double-digits with 10 points.
After holding a three-point lead, 30-27, at the half, Syracuse erupted on a 38-10 run at the start of the second stanza to take permanent control of the game. Coleman scored 14 points in the spread, including four three-pointers. Syracuse held its largest lead of the game, 72-39, after a layup by senior Awa Diop with 4:03 left in the game. The Orangewomen connected on 17of-26 shots from the field in the second half for a 65.4 shooting percent, while holding St. John's to only seven field goals (7-of-31).
Shemika Stevens led the Red Storm with 16 points and four assists. Danielle Rainey followed with nine points and seven assists.
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, when it faces Boston College at 1 p.m. in Manley Field House.
