SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Orangewomen senior guard Julie McBride scored a team-high 15 points and added seven rebounds, but it was not enough as Team Concept earned a 60-44 victory against Syracuse in an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 8 in Manley Field House.
Scoring was a problem for both teams in the first half, as they played to a 16-16 tie in the opening period. SU opened an early five-point lead when McBride connected on a three-pointer, and junior guard Rochelle Coleman laid the ball in for two. Team Concept went on a 10-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 10-7 edge. Syracuse tied the contest at 10 on a three-pointer by sophomore Jill Norton at the 9:07 mark. Concept opened up another three-point lead, 13-10, before Syracuse scored six straight points to take a 16-13 advantage with less than four minutes to play. Team Concept scored the last three points of the half to go into the lockerroom with the score knotted at 16.
Concept extended its lead to seven, 25-18, within the first five minutes of the second half. SU cut the lead to four, 25-21, on free-throw shooting by freshmen Tracy Harbut and Lauren Kohn. Team Concept scored the next eight points to take a 33-21 advantage with 10:39 remaining. Syracuse went on a 15-2 run to cut Concept's edge to one, 37-36, with less than seven minutes on the clock, and trailed 39-38 with 5:15 left to play, but that was as close as the Orange would come. Concept ended the game on a 21-6 tear to earn the victory.
Team Concept outscored SU in the paint, 24-6. Concept scored 25 of its points off turnovers, compared to 17 for Syracuse. Both teams were hampered by poor shooting, especially in the first half as Syracuse made 5-of-27 (18.5 percent), and Team Concept made 4-of-29 (13.8 percent). Concept shot 26.1 percent on the night, and the Orangewomen finished at 23.1 from the floor. SU also struggled from the foul line, making 13-of-23 (56.6 percent).
Coleman finished with seven points, and sophomore Marchele Campbell scored six. Junior Chineze Nwagbo led SU with nine rebounds and added five points.
Kate Starbird led Team Concept with 17 points and four assists. Former Orangewoman Beth Record finished with 12 points, nine boards and a game-high three steals. Sharron Francis had eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
