
No. 4 Hoyas Defeat Orangewomen, 13-3

WASHINGTON, DC - The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team held an early 2-1 lead but could not hold off the Hoyas as Georgetown defeated the Orangewomen, 13-3, on Saturday afternoon at North Kehoe Field.
Georgetown extended its record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in The BIG EAST Conference, while No. 7 Syracuse stood at 2-2 and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.
Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer led Syracuse with two goals and sophomore Monica Joines chipped in with a single tally. Zimmer has scored at least one goal in the last 27 games, a streak going back to the 2001 season.
Zimmer started the scoring with a goal at 2:02 to give SU an early 1-0 lead. GU’s Wick Stanwick responded with a free-position goal before Joines scored to put Syracuse ahead for the final time, 2-1.
Georgetown scored the next 11 goals, including three by Stanwick, to give GU a 12-2 advantage. Zimmer scored SU’s lone goal of the second half at 51:52 to make the score 12-3. The Hoyas defense held SU scoreless for the final eight minutes to seal the 13-3 victory.
The Hoyas outshot the Orangewomen 37-19 and held an 11-7 advantage in draw controls. Georgetown also scooped up 37 ground balls, compared to Syracuse’s 20. GU also forced 20 caused turnovers to SU’s eight.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, March 21 when it faces Boston College at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
