
No. 8 Orangewomen Defeat UMass, 8-5

SYRACUSE, NY - Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer extended her scoring streak to 29 games with two goals in Syracuse’s 8-5 win against Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
The No. 8 Orangewomen (4-2, 2-1 BIG EAST) increased their winning streak versus UMass (4-3) to six games.
Zimmer has scored at least one goal in the last 29 games, a streak dating back to the 2001 season. She has scored at least two goals in each of SU’s six games. With her two goals today, Zimmer moved into fourth place on Syracuse’s career goals list with 91.
Senior Kim Wayne recorded two goals and one assist, and junior Danielle Lillis chipped in two tallies. Freshman Stephanie Walker led the defense with three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Syracuse jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with freshman Meghan O’Connell starting off the scoring for the second straight game, 11 seconds into the first half. Jada Emery notched UMass’s first goal at 28:49 to make the score 4-1 at halftime.
After goals by sophomore Monica Joines and Zimmer, SU held its largest lead of the game, 6-1. at 34:42. The Minutewomen responded with three straight goals to come within three, 6-3, at 45:43.
The Minutewomen came within three again, 7-4, after Emery’s second goal of the game, but SU’s defense held UMass scoreless for the remainder of the match.
Syracuse returns to action on Wednesday, March 26, when it travels to Hamilton, NY to face Colgate at 7 p.m.
