
No. 11 Orangewomen Defeat Cornell, 12-8

SYRACUSE, NY - Six Orangewomen found the back of the net to lead No. 11 Syracuse to a 12-8 victory against No. 12 Cornell on Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome.
The Orangewomen (9-3) now lead the all-time series versus Cornell to 4-3 and increased their winning streak in the Dome to 12 games.
Junior Danielle Lillis, sophomore Monica Joines, senior Jessica Trombley, junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer, sophomore Jessica Bell and junior Cristine Doran each scored two goals in the game. Senior Kim Wayne dished out four assists in the game and moved into third place on SU’s all-time points list with 135.
After Cornell (7-4) opened the scoring to start the game, Syracuse responded with two straight goals by Doran and did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. The Big Red’s Sarah Averson tied the game at two with her second goal of the game, but Zimmer regained the lead for SU with back-to-back goals. The Orangewomen increased its lead to four, 7-3, at the half after goals by Lillis, Bell and Trombley.
Cornell scored four of the first five goals in the second half to cut the lead to one, 8-7, at 46:27. Joines scored off a free-position to keep SU ahead, 9-7. Syracuse connected on three-of-six free-position attempts in the game.
Cornell’s offense brought the Big Red within one again, 9-8, at 50:39 after Averson found the back of the net for the fourth time. Joines responded with her second straight goal after running past three Cornell defenders to make it 10-8.
Averson led Cornell with five points on four goals and an assist.
Syracuse returns to action on Sunday, April 20 when it faces Boston University at noon in Massachusetts.
