
SU Opens League Schedule With 10-5 Loss Versus No. 5 Georgetown

SYRACUSE, N.Y.
Junior Monica Joines paced SU with two goals. She tied former Orangewoman Karen Healy for seventh on SU’s all-time goals list with 53 career tallies. Joines passed Healy and ranks seventh on SU’s career points chart with 65. Sophomore goalie Jennifer Kasel faced 32 Georgetown shots and made a career-high 13 saves.
The Hoyas got on the scoreboard early when Allison Chambers scored an unassisted goal 1:46 into the game to give Georgetown a 1-0 edge. Chambers assisted on a tally by Sarah Oliphant 4:20 later to extend the Hoyas’ lead to 2-0. Joines drew a foul for the Orangewomen and converted the ensuing free-position opportunity to get SU on the board at 16:05. The Georgetown defense held the Orangewomen scoreless for the next 25:14 and outscored Syracuse 5-0 during that stretch to open up a 7-1 margin with 19:34 left to play in the contest. Senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer broke the drought at 41:59 with an unassisted goal to make the score 7-2, but Oliphant found the back of the net at 49:21 to reclaim a seven-goal margin for Georgetown, 9-2. The Orangewomen recorded three of the game’s final five goals, including two in the last minute to make the score 10-5.
Junior Courtney Palladino notched her first goal of the campaign against the Hoyas. She also finished with four draw controls and two ground balls. Freshman Jill DePetris scored the second goal of her career in the game and contributed three ground balls and one draw control.
Oliphant, the reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week paced the Hoyas with four goals and Chambers added a goal and two assists. Oliphant also picked up four ground balls. Coco Stawich, Catherine Elbe, Anouk Peters and Lauryn Bernier each recorded two points for Georgetown. Sarah Robinson stopped five shots in net for the Hoyas.
Georgetown controlled the action in the first period, oushooting the Orangewomen 22-6 in the half. The Hoyas finished with a 32-17 advantage in the shots column for the game. The Hoyas also owned a 23-18 margin in ground balls.
Georgetown leads the all-time series with SU, 7-0.
The Orangewomen will host Massachusetts in a non-conference encounter on Friday, March 19 at 5:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
