SYRACUSE, N.Y.
The Big Green scored four straight goals at the start of the second half, three of them coming on free-position chances to take command of the game. With Dartmouth leading 5-3 at halftime, the Big Green got back-to-back free-position tallies from Lana Smith and Casey Hazel to increase their lead to 7-3 at 39:13. Smith assisted on a goal by Kristen Zimmer at the 45:48 mark to give Dartmouth a five-goal margin, and Whitney Douthett capped the run with a goal at 46:30 to extend its lead to 9-3. Junior Monica Joines broke the SU scoring drought when she found the back of the cage at 47:53, but the Big Green scored the final four goals of the game to produce the final margin.
Senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer led the Orangewomen with two goals, both of which came in the first half. Sophomore Meghan O'Connell contributed a goal and added one ground ball and two draw controls. Senior Danielle Lillis assisted on O’Connell’s tally and moved into a tie for tenth on SU’s all-time assists list with Erin Boyle. Lillis has 14 career helpers. Joines finished with a team-best four ground balls and contributed one caused turnover. Sophomore goalie Jennifer Kasel kept the Orangewomen in the game early, making 14 saves in the first half. She finished with 21 stops on day, two short of her personal best. Fresman Chelsea Strodel made her first-career start in the contest and contributed two ground balls for the Orangewomen.
Smith recorded a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. She also had four ground balls and one draw control. Hazel contributed five points (three goals, two assists). Kristen Zimmer, the sister of Syracuse assistant coach Amy Zimmer, finished with two goals. She also notched eight groundballs, three draw controls, and forced six SU turnovers.
Dartmouth outshot the Orangewomen 38-16 and held a 29-23 advantage in ground balls.
It was the first win for the Big Green at the Carrier Dome. They entered are now 1-2 in the building. Dartmouth has won the last two meetings with the Orangewomen and holds a 3-2 edge in the all-time series.
The Orangewomen will return to action on Sunday, April 18 when they play at BIG EAST foe Boston College. The draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
