Syracuse has not lost since a 10-5 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Georgetown on March 13. The Orangewomen’s consecutive wins streak is tied for the third-longest in program history. SU won 12 consecutive matches in 2000 and posted seven straight wins in 1998.
The Hokies led SU, 3-0, until sophomore Stephanie Walker found the back of the net for the first time in 2004 at the 9:52 mark of the first half. Her tally sparked a 6-0 run for the Orangewomen, making the score 6-3 at 21:18. Senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer and freshman Jill DePetris each recorded a goal and an assist in the stretch. Virginia Tech scored two of the next three goals to cut SU’s lead to 7-5 at the half.
Zimmer opened the second period with a free-position goal at 31:04 to increase the Syracuse margin to 8-5, but the Hokies’ Kelsey Mays answered with a free-position tally of her own to keep it a two-goal game, 8-6, at 33:41. The Orangewomen reeled off three consecutive goals to take control of the game, 11-6, with 11:28 left to play. Lindsey Welch of Virginia Tech tallied a free-position goal at 56:20, but SU’s defense stiffened and sophomore Melody Agnew added a late goal at 59:35 to secure the win.
Zimmer paced SU with five points (four goals, one assist) and junior Monica Joines contributed three points (two goals, one assist). Joines moved into sole possession of ninth-place on the Orangewomen’s all-time assists ledger. She now has 15 helpers for her career. Junior Courtney Palladino tied her personal-best with two goals in the match. Palladino has scored seven goals in SU’s nine games this year, surpassing career total of six goals in 23 games prior to the start of 2004. Senior Danielle Lillis scored the 58th goal of her career in the game, tying her with Kim Wayne for seventh on SU’s all-time goals list. Sophomore goalie Jen Kasel earned the win and made 13 saves for the Orangewomen, including nine stops in the second half.
Welch led the Hokies with two goals and Kate Threadgold added two assists. Mays also contributed two points for Virginia Tech and goalkeeper Jamie McGraw finished with 13 saves.
The Orangewomen will host No. 12 Dartmouth on Sunday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. All fans will be admitted to the game free of charge.
