SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse freshman Jessica Richter paced the Orange with 14 points in a 75-50 loss to #22/19 Boston College in front of a season-high 1,716 fans at Manley Field House on Saturday, Feb. 12. It was SU's (11-12, 3-9 BIG EAST) fourth straight loss, while the Eagles (16-6, 7-4) stopped a three-game losing streak.
Senior Rochelle Coleman scored 12 points and had four assists and freshman Vaida Sipaviciute added 12 points, four rebounds and four blocked shots. The double-figure scoring effort was the sixth in a row for Sipaviciute, tying the Orange's season high for an individual. Sipaviciute's four blocked shots raised her season total to 59, which ranks eighth on SU's single-season record list. Bonnie Baker is seventh with 62 (1981-82).
Brooke Queenan led four BC players in double figures with 16 points. Clare Droesch had 15 points on 6-of-8 from the field, while Aja Parham and Lisa Macchia each had 11.
After heading into the locker room down 43-30, Richter scored seven points for SU, including a three-point field goal that brought the Orange to within three, 47-44, with 12:47 left in the game. That was as close as the Orange would come as Syracuse would score just six points the rest of the way. SU made its run by hitting five of its first 10 shots and limiting BC to two makes in its first 10 shots. After a Boston College timeout, Syracuse was just 1-for-13 for the remainder of the half, while the Eagles hit 11-of-17 to end the game.
In the first half, Boston College jumped out to a 16-6 lead. Coleman sparked an 8-2 SU run, which brought the Orange to within four, 18-14, with 10:43 remaining. Coleman hit a three-point field goal, a pair of free throws and had an assist during the two-minute stretch. Boston College went on an 11-0 run during the next 3:30 to take a 29-14 lead. SU cut the margin back to 10 points at 36-26Â on a jumper by Tracy Harbut with 2:14 remaining, but again the Eagles countered scoring seven of the last 11 points of the half.
Syracuse shot just 32.7 percent for the game, while the Eagles were able to convert on 50.9 percent of their shots. Boston College also held a 43-23 rebounding edge and converted 16 Syracuse turnovers into 27 points.
Syracuse will host Rutgers on Wednesday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Manley Field House.
