SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team snapped its six-game losing streak, defeating Seton Hall, 51-38, in its final home game of the season. Syracuse is now 12-14 overall and 4-11 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates have lost three straight games and move to 14-12 and 6-9 in the conference.
Senior Chineze Nwagbo scored eight points and had eight rebounds and senior Rochelle Colman added six points and five assists, and tied her career-high with a team-leading 10 boards. The victory marked the final home game for Coleman, Nwagbo and classmates Krystalyn Ellerbe and Sarah Wegrzynowicz.
Sophomore Lauren Kohn led SU with 11 points. She was 4-for-7 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range. Syracuse had six players with at least five points and nine of the 10 Orange that played scored at least one point.
Ashley Bush led Seton Hall with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Monique Blake grabbed 16 rebounds and made four blocks.
Seton Hall scored the first point of the game on a free throw by Heta Korpivaara. That was the only time the Pirates led in the contest. With the Orange ahead by one, 4-3, Coleman hit two three-point field goals, sandwiched between a Mary Joe Riley jumper, to spark a 17-0 run that gave the Orange an 18-point advantage, 21-3, with 9:43 left.
Syracuse took its largest lead of the contest, 32-10, with 2:20 remaining in the period, and led at halftime, 32-15. The Orange held Seton Hall to 18.5 percent shooting from the field during the first half.
In the second half, a Kohn three-point field goal gave the Orange a 20-point margin with 12:53 left to play. Seton Hall used a 13-6 run during the next eight and one-half minutes to cut Syracuse's lead to 11, 43-32, with 4:22 remaining. Seton Hall got within 10, but did could not get any closer. SU's Amanda Adamson connected on 3-of-4 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory for the Orange.
The win gives Syracuse one more win in conference play than it had last season and doubles the overall win total from last year. The Orange concluded the home schedule with an 8-7 mark, its best record since going 10-3 in 2001-02. It also snaps a two-game skid the Orange has had against the Pirates.
The 38 points the Orange gave up to Seton Hall was the fewest points Syracuse has allowed since December 7, 2001 when the Orange defeated St. Bonaventure, 74-37.
Syracuse will close out the regular season at Georgetown on Tuesday, March 1. The game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
