No. 13 Orange Loses To No. 7 Virginia, 14-9

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Whitaker Hagerman and Blair Weymouth combined for nine goals as the No. 7 Virginia Cavaliers defeated No. 13 Syracuse, 14-9, on March 4 at Klockner Field. Junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) recorded her second hat trick of the season in the loss.
Seniors Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) and Meghan O’Connell (Camillus, N.Y.) both scored two goals in the game. Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) added a pair of goals as well. Junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) handed out two assists and caused three turnovers while senior goalkeeper Jen Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) saved eight shots in the losing effort. Junior Chelsea Strodel (Skaneateles, N.Y.) picked up a career-high six ground balls.
Virginia began the game with the first two goals, but Dragon and Fortune each put one past the keeper to tie the game, 2-2. After that, the Cavaliers scored four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead. Hagerman scored twice in that span. Dragon responded with a goal to cut the deficit to three, but Virginia scored three of the next four goals to head into halftime with a 9-4 advantage.
In the second half, Hagerman tallied the first score to push the lead to 10-4. Rowan and Fortune scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to four, but the Cavaliers scored four-straight to extend its cushion to 14-6 to seal the win. Fortune scored next followed by O’Connell’s two tallies.
For Virginia (3-1), Hagerman posted five goals and Weymouth had four and two assists. Tyler Leachman and Nikki Lieb each had a pair of scores.
SU (2-1) begins its seven-game homestand on March 7 when it hosts Binghamton in a 7:00 p.m. tilt at the Carrier Dome.
