SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Eleven different student-athletes recorded a point as the No. 13 Orange defeated Binghamton, 21-2, on March 7 at the Carrier Dome. Leading all scorers was junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) who registered career highs with five goals and six points.
Fortune topped her old personal best of four goals which she notched against the Bearcats in last year’s contest. She also established a new career high with four draw controls. Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) notched four points for the second time this season as she scored three goals and assisted on another. Junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) tallied her first hat trick of the year with three goals. Senior Melody Agnew (Winchester, Mass.) scored her first three points of the season with a goal and two assists.
The freshmen class got in the action as Maggie Martin (Englewood, Colo.) and Allison Smuts (Chester Springs, Pa.) both scored a pair of goals in the win, the first of their careers. Classmate Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) also added two goals. Bridget Hamm (Penn Yan, N.Y.) posted the first goal of her career as well.
The 21 goals are the most SU has scored since a 21-9 win against Colgate on March 30, 2004. It is the third time the Orange has scored 21 times in a game. The first time it happened was on March 31, 1998, also against Colgate, in SU’s inaugural season. The most goals scored in a game by the Orange is 23, which it accomplished against Albany on March 26, 1998.
Syracuse dominated the draws as it held a 20-5 advantage in that category. It also took 40 shots in the game compared to the Bearcats’ 11.
For Binghamton (0-2), Danielle Edwards and Leanne Musso tallied the goals and Lauren Wetherell notched an assist. Goalkeeper Sandra Alvarez stopped 13 shots.
SU (3-1) continues its home stand on Saturday, March 11, when it hosts No. 8 Georgetown in its first BIG EAST contest of the season.
