More than 25,000 fans gathered in the Carrier Dome on this date to welcome home the Syracuse men’s basketball team after claiming the 2003 national championship. The victory celebration included the presentation of the NABC’s crystal championship trophy. Speakers included head coach Jim Boeheim, and players Craig Forth, Hakim Warrick, Gerry McNamara and Carmelo Anthony, along with SU Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw, Syracuse Mayor Matthew Driscoll, Onondaga County Executive Nicholas Pirro, State Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli and State Sen. John DeFrancisco. Fans were treated to highlights of SU's tournament run and the raising of a championship banner.
The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team has a perfect 4-0 record on this date in the Dome. Central New York foe Cornell has been SU’s opponent in two of those contests. In 1993, Matt Riter scored Syracuse’s final goal of the first quarter and scored three straight goals to start the second that began an 8-0 scoring run for the Orange. Syracuse’s defense did its part, allowing a season-low five goals in a 15-5 win. Riter finished with five goals.
Josh Coffman scored a career-high seven points, including four first-half goals, to propel No. 3-ranked Syracuse to a 14-10 victory against 12th-ranked Cornell in 2001. Coffman tallied the game's first goal just 2:22 into the contest which marked his 100th career point at Syracuse.
Seven different Orange scored as No. 3-ranked Syracuse defeated No. 20 Loyola, 13-8, in front of 6,399 at the Dome in 2004. Michael Powell equalled his career high of five assists and finished with a game-high six points, moving him ahead of Tom Marechek (1989-92) for sixth place on the school's career points list.. Linemates Brian Nee and Brian Crockett each had three goals and one assist.
In 1982, Syracuse defeated Bucknell, 22-4.
The Orange women’s lacrosse squad lost a heartbreaker to Rutgers, 9-8, on this date in 1999. Syracuse trailed, 8-4, at halftime but rallied in the second half. Katrina Hable scored twice to cut the lead in half. Kara Hanover scored at the 17:17 mark, and Hable scored again with 36 seconds remaining to keep SU’s hopes alive. Syracuse was unable to convert a last-second opportunity, giving the Scarlet Knights the one-goal victory. Hable finished with four goals and four assists.
In addition to SU events, the Dome hosted the Boy Power Dinner on this date in 1992.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
