PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Syracuse couldn't overcome a first-half goal by Pittsburgh as the Panthers defeated the Orange, 1-0, on Sunday, Oct. 11 in Pittsburgh. Syracuse is now 4-8-3 overall this season and 1-5-1 in BIG EAST play, while Pittsburgh goes to 7-3-4 overall, 2-1-4 in conference action.
The Panthers recorded the only goal of the game in the 35th minute when Katheryn Kunugi scored on a header off a direct kick from Kat Weiler. The Orange held Pittsburgh scoreless in the second half, successfully defending against five corner kicks and 11 shots, but couldn't net the equalizer as it endured its second consecutive 1-0 setback.
“We have to be able to put together back-to-back performances in a weekend,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We didn't do that. We showed a lack of character and confidence. We have made our job difficult for the rest of the season. We have to come together. This week we'll face more tough competition.”
Pittsburgh outshot Syracuse, 16-4, and had six corner kicks to one for SU. Senior Eliza Bennett-Hattan (Burke, Va.) made seven saves, including five in the second half, for the Orange, while Alison Finch had three stops for Pittsburgh.
The Orange goes on the road for the final time during the regular season next weekend when it plays at Rutgers on Thursday and at Seton Hall on Saturday. Both contests begin at 7 p.m.
