
Schoedel Up for Patty Kaz Award

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior goaltender Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) has been nominated as one of 43 women's ice hockey student-athletes for the 2009 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. The Patty Kazmaier Award is given to the top woman college ice hockey player in the United States.
The honor is presented during at the 2009 Women's Frozen Four at Agganis Arena in Boston, Mass. on the weekend of March 20. The award was first presented in 1998.
Schoedel was Syracuse's first student-athlete to sign with the Orange in its inaugural season to play under head coach Paul Flanagan. The Ithaca, N.Y. product transferred from the University of New Hampshire after manning the net two years for the Wildcats.
Schoedel has started all 23 games for Syracuse thus far and has allowed 3.21 goals per game. The third-year psychology major has compiled a .900 save percentage for in SU's first season on the ice.
The third-year transfer recorded two shutouts this season and made a career-high 46 saves against #3/3 Mercyhurst on Nov. 15.
Schoedel joins six other members of College Hockey America on the Patty Kazmaier list of candidates. Wayne State's Melissa Boal, Natalie Payne, Sam Poyton, Mercyhurst's Meghan Agosta, Robert Morris' Brianne McLaughlin and Niagara's Ashley Riggs round out the CHA contingent of nominees.
The award is named in honor of the late Patty Kazmaier-Sandt, a four-year varsity letter winner and All-Ivy League honoree for the Princeton University women's ice hockey team from 1981 through 1986. She also played field hockey and lacrosse. She died on February 15, 1990 at the age of 28 from a rare blood disease.
An award of The USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award recognizes the accomplishments of the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey each season. Other selection criteria include outstanding individual and team skills, sportsmanship, performance in the clutch, personal character, competitiveness and a love of hockey. Consideration is also given to academic achievement and civic involvement.
Schoedel was nominated for the CHA Defensive Player of the Week award on Feb. 2 for her combined total of 62 saves against Syracuse's first conference sweep against Niagara two weeks ago.
The Orange returns to the rink in Fairfield, Conn. for a two-game set again Sacred Heart on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14. Friday's game is slated for 7 pm while the Saturday matinee will be at 2 pm. In the previous matchup between the Orange the Pioneers, Syracuse outscored SHU 17-3 in two games. Once the Orange returns, SU will host Division II program St. Anselm on Friday, Feb. 20 for the final showing at Tennity Ice Pavilion in the inaugural season. Saturday's game will take place at the Onondaga County War Memorial at 2 pm.
