OLEAN, N.Y. – The women's soccer squad had its two-game winning streak in season openers snapped in a 2-1 setback in double overtime at St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Aug. 22. Freshman Tina Romagnuolo's first career goal tied the score in the 78th minute, but the Bonnies found the back of the net in the second overtime period for the game-winner.
Both teams had offensive opportunities, but Syracuse was the more dangerous team for most of the game, outshooting the Bonnies, 15-11.
St. Bonaventure (1-0) took the lead less than a minute into the second half on a play that started with a crossing pass into the box. In a scramble for the ball, Courtney Bosse took a shot that deflected off a Syracuse defender into the goal to give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until Romagnuolo recorded the equalizer on an assist from junior Megan Bellingham . The Orange (0-1) continued to pressure offensively, recording two corners and three shots in the final three minutes of regulation, but couldn't put anything by St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Nicole Market, sending the game into overtime.
After neither team scored in the first overtime period, Bosse netted the game winner on an assist from Anna Cunningham in the 103rd minute of play.
“It was a game that we dominated and we had several more scoring opportunities,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We just couldn't finish.”
Syracuse recorded seven corner kicks to two for St. Bonaventure. Orange goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made two saves, increasing her career total to 245. She needs just 10 saves to become Syracuse's all-time leader in that category. Market finished with nine saves for St. Bonaventure.
The Orange is back on the road next weekend when it will compete at the Colorado College Splash Fairfield Inn Invitational. Syracuse plays Washington State on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Drake on Sunday at 2 p.m.
