SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University ice hockey team debuted at No. 10 in the USCHO.com poll for the first time in program history, as announced on Monday, January 11. The Orange is coming off a 2-1 overtime victory at No. 8 Cornell and a 7-2 road win against St. Anselm to improve its record to 13-8-1 in just its second season. Prior to the holiday break, SU was receiving six votes in the poll, landing right outside the top 10.
The Orange recently cracked the top 10 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll with 12 points on Dec. 15, 2009, marking the first time it has appeared in a national poll.
Head coach Paul Flanagan has led his Orange to a .617 winning percentage in a season which has featured matchups against the nation's top collegiate hockey programs, including No. 2 Minnesota, No. 3 New Hampshire, and No. 8 Cornell. Syracuse will host top-ranked Mercyhurst on Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23 for a pair of conference games. Syracuse's strength of schedule is ranked 10th in the nation according to the KRACH, which is a statistical ranking similar to the RPI.
The Orange returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion to host a two-game series against Quinnipiac on Friday, January 15 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, January 16 at 2 p.m.
