SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Jenna Rickan scored with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime in the Syracuse women's soccer squad's 1-1 tie against Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange is now 5-7-4 overall, 2-4-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Panthers are 4-9-2, 1-5-1 in league play.
Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made five saves for Syracuse, giving her 71 this season. She now ranks ninth on Syracuse's record list for saves in a season.
Pittsburgh scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. Katelyn Ruhe served the ball into the box to Klarissa Ames, who put a slow roller into the left corner of the goal to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Syracuse registered five shots in the opening period and earned four corner kicks, cut couldn't find the back of the net and trailed at halftime.
The Orange dominated the second half, outshooting the Panthers, 11-2. Syracuse created some of its best scoring chances in the final 10 minutes. Freshman Rachel Blum's header off a free kick looked like it was going to find the left corner of the goal, but Pittsburgh goalkeeper Mori Kephart just got her hand on the ball to send the shot wide. Sophomore Tina Romanguolo sent her shot wide from the right side of the box in 87th minute before the Orange finally broke through in the 88th minute. Romagnuolo passed the ball to Rickan on the left side of the box, who fired the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. It marked the eighth time in 2010 that Syracuse has scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Orange continued to apply the offensive pressure and had a chance to win the game with less than a minute remaining in regulation, but Rosina Callisto's shot went just above the crossbar.
Pittsburgh produced most of the scoring chances in the first overtime session. The Panthers earned three corner kicks, and on the final attempt, Katelyn Lippert connected with Alexandra Jaffe, who headed the ball towards the net. But Anghel was there to make the save and keep the game tied. The Orange produced three shots in the second overtime period, but couldn't convert on its opportunities as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
“We made our job difficult after we allowed the early goal,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We didn't really get our rhythm until the second half, which has been our habit all year. We can't afford to do that. The first half of the game was played in slow motion. We have to be ready to from the opening whistle.”
Syracuse outshot Pittsburgh, 20-10, while the Panthers had eight corner kicks to six for the Orange. Kephart finished with eight saves for Pittsburgh.
The Orange continues its homestand on Friday when it hosts Rutgers at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free of charge.
