CHICAGO, Ill. – Sophomore Alyscha Mottershead scored her second goal of the season but it wasn't enough as DePaul defeated Syracuse, 2-1 in overtime, on Sunday, Oct. 3 in Chicago, Ill. The Orange is now 5-6-3 overall, 2-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons improve to 8-4-2, including a 3-2 mark in conference action.
The teams were tied, 1-1, after the first half. Syracuse took an early lead when Mottershead scored in the 23rd minute on a slow roller from 18 yards out. DePaul's Natasa Radosavljevic knotted the score in the 43rd minute, taking a pass from Callie Hemming and putting her shot from the center of the field in the back of the net.
The Orange offense created several scoring opportunities in the second half, earning five corner kicks and producing four shots, but couldn't convert on its chances. Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made three saves in the second half to keep the game tied and force overtime.
The Blue Demons netted the game-winner off a restart 2:06 into the extra session. DePaul attacked and Arianna Foster played the ball into the box to Ashleigh Goddard. Goddard headed the ball into the net to give the Blue Demons the victory.
“DePaul is a very direct team and I thought we coped well with it,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We let up in the last five minutes of the first half and had poor marking in the box, which has been our curse all year. We controlled the second half and put together some great soccer. We didn't capitalize on our chances, of which we had quite a few. We didn't put them away and as a result, we were punished in overtime. I'd like to thank all of the alumni and parents who were at the game for their support. I'm disappointed that we didn't get a win for them.”
The Blue Demons outshot the Orange, 10-7, while Syracuse held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Anghel finished with five saves. Kelsey Hoinkes made one save for DePaul.
The Orange begins a four-game homestand on Friday when it hosts West Virginia at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free of charge.
