SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three new opponents and four NCAA Division I championship tournament teams dot the tentative 2010-11 Syracuse ice hockey schedule released by head coach Paul Flanagan. The Orange will play 18 home games, including a five-game homestand to start the season, and will go on the road for 15 games to round out its 34-game regular season slate. SU will play 16 College Hockey America league games and 11 ECAC games along with five tilts against Hockey East opponents and two versus WCHA teams. Syracuse continues to faceoff against the nation's best, as it will play eight teams that either finished in the top 10 or received votes in the final poll of the season, including NCAA runner-up Cornell.
The Orange begins its slate with a five-game homestand against Hockey East opponents, including a home opener against Northeastern on Friday, October 2. CHA conference play begins Friday, December 3 with a two-game series against Wayne State at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
For the first time, Syracuse will host the 2011 CHA Championship Tournament the weekend of March 4.
Game times are yet to be determined. This schedule is tentative and some dates are subject to change.
Flanagan also announced the team captains for next year's squad. Rising senior Stefanie Marty will serve as captain, while fellow upcoming senior Julie Rising will be one of three assistant captains. Rising junior Taylor Metcalfe and upcoming sophomore Isabel Menard will also wear the 'A,' as each veteran class is represented. It is the first time the Orange has released team captains in the spring.
In just its second season, Syracuse (18-17-1) doubled its win total over its inaugural campaign. After earning a .500 winning-percentage (8-8-0) in the league, SU proved to be a rising threat in the CHA by winning its first playoff game in team history. The Orange also achieved national prominence as it was voted No. 10 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls for the first time in team history. CHA Coach of the Year Paul Flanagan will return 18 student-athletes to the ice, including CHA Rookie of the Year Isabel Menard, who finished first in points (37) and assists (22).
