Williamsburg, Va. -- For the second consecutive year, the women's soccer team will be the first Syracuse squad in action in 2010-11 when it opens the season at William & Mary on Friday at 7 p.m. The Orange's road trip continues on Sunday when it plays at Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
Syracuse finished last season with a record of 5-11-3. Highlights of the season included its longest winning streak since 2004 and a five-game unbeaten streak, its longest since 2005. Third-year head coach Phil Wheddon's squad returns four of its top five scorers from last season.
THE SERIES
The Orange is 0-2 all-time against William & Mary. The first meeting between the two schools was in 2006 in Williamsburg, which the Tribe won, 3-0. The teams met again in 2008 at the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational. William & Mary scored with less than seven minutes remaining to record a 2-1 victory.
Sunday's game marks the first meeting between Syracuse and Old Dominion.
ORANGE IN SEASON OPENERS
For the fifth time in the last six seasons, Syracuse begins the season on the road. The Orange enters Friday's contest having won two of its last three season openers and four of its last seven.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ROSTER
Syracuse welcomes back 13 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad. The roster includes two seniors, four juniors, 13 sophomores and eight freshmen. New York is the most represented state as seven members of the Orange hail from the Empire State. Syracuse also has seven international student-athletes, including four from Canada.
