SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore Tina Romagnuolo scored the Orange's first goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in regulation in a double-overtime 1-1 tie against Lehigh on Friday, August 27 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse is now 0-1-2 on the season, while the game was the season opener for the Mountain Hawks.
The Orange dominated the first half, outshooting Lehigh, 13-3, but neither team could find the back of the net. Lehigh had a scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute, but sophomore Skylar Sabbag headed Ardyn Olszko's shot away from the goal to preserve the 0-0 tie. The Mountain Hawks broke the tie in the 76th minute when Glynn Fitzer put her shot into the top left corner of the goal to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Jana Basubas was credited with an assist on the play.
Syracuse tied the score in the 88th minute. Senior Megan Bellingham passed the ball into the box where she found Romagnuolo in front of the goal. Romagnuolo headed the ball past Lehigh goalkeeper Lauren Mains for her first goal of the season and 10th of her career. The Orange continued to apply pressure and created another scoring chance, but Mains stopped Bellingham's shot with 1:20 left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
The overtime periods featured back-and-forth action as both squads recorded two shots, but neither could find the back of the net as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Orange outshot Lehigh, 24-10, while the Mountain Hawks earned five corner kicks to two for SU. Mains finished with 13 saves for Lehigh.
“I thought we dominated the game,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We obviously outshot them by a large margin. We just have to finish. It's going to come. It's going to happen. This is the third game in a row where we've played well but we had a defensive mishap. We let a sloppy goal in. We fought hard, we worked hard. It was a very physical game. We are getting better and better.”
The Orange is back in action at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday when it hosts Colgate at 1 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
