SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior Megan Bellingham recorded a goal and an assist and sophomore Brielle Heitman scored twice to lead Syracuse to a 4-0 win against Binghamton on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the SU Soccer Stadium. With its second consecutive win, the Orange improves to 3-3-2 overall, while Binghamton goes to 2-4.
The four goals, which all came in the second half, are the most the Orange has scored in a game since the season opener in 2004 when it defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0, at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The Orange took control of Sunday's game in the second half. Bellingham gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute when she found the back of the net off a corner kick by junior Taylor Chamberlain. The Orange increased its lead less than two minutes later when junior Casey Ramirez served the ball into the box from the right side. The ball went off Binghamton goalkeeper Carrie Martin's hands and deflected to Heitman, who put her shot in the goal to give SU a 2-0 advantage. The score remained that way until the 82nd minute when Heitman registered another goal, this time on a corner kick from sophomore Rosina Callisto. It marks the second time Heitman has scored twice in a game this season. Sophomore Patricia Lind added a goal, the first of her career, in the 88th minute off an assist from Bellingham for the 4-0 final.
The Bearcats' best scoring opportunity came midway through the second half when they stole the ball around midfield and had a 3-on-2 breakaway, but SU defender Cecilia Borgstrom was able to recover and knocked the ball out of bounds. The Orange eventually worked the ball out of its defensive end without allowing a shot on goal. Overall, Syracuse outshot Binghamton, 16-3, including a 12-1 advantage in the second half. The Orange also had three corner kicks to one for the Bearcats.
Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made two saves and recorded her second career shutout. Martin finished with six saves for Binghamton.
“During the first half (this season), it's taken us a long time to settle into a rhythm,” said head coach Phil Wheddon. “Today, they imposed their will on us (in the first half). They played very direct. Every ball was a long ball and we weren't able to get our composure. Sometimes it takes us a while to get into the game and get our rhythm. Once we get our rhythm, we move the ball quite well. Whether we are a first-half team or a second-half team, I'm just happy to come away with a win.”
Bellingham's goal was the 13th of her career. She is now tied with Stacy Shanning (1996-98) for ninth on Syracuse's all-time goals scored list. She is Syracuse's leading scorer this season with nine points (3g, 3a).
The Orange tries to extend its winning streak on Friday when it opens BIG EAST play against St. John's at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission to the game is free.
