NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Patricia Lind recorded her second goal of the season to lead the Syracuse women's soccer squad to a 1-1 tie at Yale on Sunday, Sept. 19. The tie extends the Orange's unbeaten streak to four and gives it a 4-3-3 mark overall, while the Bulldogs go to 2-4-1.
“It was a hard-fought game against an organized and disciplined team,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “They caused us problems with their mobility up front. It was a very physical contest and we struggled to find our rhythm. When things didn't go our way, we got flustered and out of shape, which only made matters worse. Hopefully we can rebound from this game and go into our game this week and show we've worked on the issues that need to be addressed.”
Yale scored the first goal of the game in the 36th minute on a penalty kick after Syracuse was called for tripping in the box. Enma Mullo took the penalty kick and put her shot past Orange goalkeeper Brittany Anghel to give Yale the lead.
The Bulldogs held onto the lead until the 82nd minute. Syracuse sophomore Rosina Callisto took a shot that hit the inside of the post and rolled across the goal line to Lind, who tapped it into the net for the equalizer that sent the game into overtime.
Lind had a chance to win the game for the Orange early in the second overtime session when she dribbled the ball down the field and fired a hard shot on goal. But Yale goalkeeper Ayana Sumiyasu dove to her left to make the save and keep the game tied. The Orange had two more shots on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Syracuse produced 11 shots on goal and four corner kicks, while Yale had 13 shots and two corner kicks. Anghel played in goal in the first half for the Orange, while Erin Quinlan played the second half and both overtime sessions. She finished with three saves – two in the second half, including a stop in the 87th minute to preserve the tie, and one in the second overtime period. Sumiyasu finished with five saves for Yale.
“While our players are disappointed with the tie, we exerted a lot of energy on Friday (against St. John's),” Wheddon said. “I'm proud of our effort and work rate on a hot day and on a turf field, which created some problems for us.”
The Orange now has 13 goals through 10 games this season. That total equals the offensive output of last season when SU had 13 goals in 19 contests.
Syracuse, which played its final non-conference game of the season against Yale, returns to action Thursday at Providence at 4 p.m. before hosting Connecticut on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
