HAVERHILL, Mass. – The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team has been picked to finish second in the College Hockey America (CHA) Preseason Coach's poll. In just its second season, the Orange recorded an 18-17-1 overall record and went 8-8 in conference action. SU finished the season as CHA semifinalists as it was edged by perennial powerhouse Mercyhurst in the championship game.
Last year's CHA tournament champion and NCAA Frozen Four Semifinalist, Mercyhurst, was predicted to take the regular season crown. The Lakers received four of the five first-place votes, while Syracuse was the only other CHA team to receive a vote. Rounding out the five-team conference poll were Niagara, Robert Morris and Wayne State.
Head coach Paul Flanagan and the Orange are preparing for the 2010 season as the program continues to make a name for itself. Syracuse will face off against Northeastern in the season opener on October 1 at 7 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Syracuse will also host the CHA tournament this season at Tennity Ice Pavilion on March 4-6.
