Sophomore center Kayla Alexander has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced today. It is the first weekly honor roll mention of the season for Alexander and the fourth for the Orange. Alexander has already earned a pair of BIG EAST Player of the Week awards this season, becoming the only active player in the conference besides Connecticut's Maya Moore to do so.
The Milton, Ontario native notched her sixth double-double of the season and seventh of her career at Marquette, pairing a team-best 17 points with a team-high tying 10 rebounds. She was 5-of-10 (.500) from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in the win while adding two blocks and a steal.
The 2009-10 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team honoree leads the team in points (14.0), blocks (3.2), field-goal percentage (.594), free-throw percentage (.810) and rebounds (7.8). Alexander leads the BIG EAST in blocks, ranks second in field-goal percentage, third in free-throw percentage, fifth in offensive rebounds (3.4), eighth in rebounding, 11th in scoring and 15th in defensive rebounds (4.5). Her six double-doubles are tied for third among conference student-athletes.
Alexander, a social studies education major in the School of Education, was also named the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 23.
Alexander and the Orange return to the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome to host Pittsburgh on Wednesday, January 26 at 7 p.m. The contest will be televised live on Time Warner Sports in Syracuse as part of a four-game Orange women's basketball television package on the network this season.
